Nice Aunties

Writer: Majken Zein SørensenMajken Zein Sørensen

"Anyone of any age can be labelled an ‘auntie’. It’s not something you want to be associated with. It could mean you’re old-fashioned, rigid in your thinking or naggy. It’s rather negative to be called one. But what if we could change this perception?Turning it from dread into something fun and positive?" - Niceaunties.

When the Singaporean AI artist Niceaunties created her project 'niceaunties', she was inspired by the older women in her own family, including her grandmother, who was born in Singapore in the early 1930s. She didn’t have the chance to access proper education and worked on a rubber plantation from an early age before entering an arranged marriage and going on to have eight children. Through her artwork, Niceaunties aspires to imagine “a different kind of life and unbridled freedom” for this generation of women.

Chose the curious road

I got this really interesting lesson from the American writer Elizabeth Gilbert when she gave a talk in Copenhagen earlier this year. It’s about keeping your creativity alive, a subject she’s investigated for most of her life. She said, "When leaving your house, try to choose the road that seems most interesting to you, the one that awakens your curiosity. Do your whole walk like this and see what happens."

Thanks for reading!
