Creepy Costumes & Spirit Phones

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

Happy Halloween...

Here’s to you, A Handful of History - 5 creative things on history I thought were worth sharing. Enjoy!

Creepy Costumes. These old vintage photographs of people dressed up in Halloween costumes are not only scary - they are absolutely creepy!! (If you wonder where the tradition of wearing Halloween costumes comes from all in all here’s an answer.)

Strange-looking people. And speaking of unusual photographs…The book “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” by Ransom Riggs is inspired by the author’s collection of vintage photos of strange-looking people. I stumbled upon it (then bought it and read it) some years ago but it was not until this weekend I watched the film adaptation. It is directed by Tim ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ Burton and is as adventurous as the book. I highly recommend both!

Spirit Phone. In the 1920s the American inventor Thomas Edison had the idea of inventing a phone for calling up the spirits. His idea became known as a “spirit phone”, and it caused a media storm at the time. For years many historians believed the invention was nothing but a joke or a hoax since no blueprints or prototypes of a spirit phone could be found anywhere. However, in 2015 the French journalist Philippe Baudouin discovered a rare version of Edison’s diary in a thrift store in France in which his theory of the spirit world - and how it might be possible to contact it - is mentioned…

Ghost Hunting. Feel like ghost hunting yourself - but don’t know where to start? Here are some Ghost Hunting Apps that can help you get going. (You might want to read ’10 Things To Know Before You Go On A Ghost Hunt’ first)….Please let me know how it turns out!

Scary Stories. Inspiration for a scary evening in - here’s a list of Classic Halloween Movies & 20 Creepy Ghost Story Podcasts too…Muahahaha.

The (historical) 1984 movie “Ghostbusters” begins with a scene in The New York Public Library. In 2010 the comedy collective “Improv Everywhere” thought it was time to make an encore appearance. 👻 Great fun!
