Big Heart, Strong Hands

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

Some thoughts...

I was clicking my way through Tate Modern's webpage, listening in on the podcast “Where Does Time Go?”- indeed, where does the time go these days?!? From there click-click-click I stumbled upon this mug decorated by David Shrigley, “Everything Is Good”. I don’t know how things are at your place, perhaps good, perhaps less good, but at least I hope this mug by Shrigley can help put a smile on your face, even just for a moment. Keep at it. Hang on. Thumbs up. Everything is good - or at least it will be, I’m sure.

Here’s to you, a Handful of History - 5 exciting things on history I thought were worth sharing. Enjoy!

“This is a story about beauty, about olden days, about a culture that is disappearing. And about the meaning of being a human being.” The Norwegian photographer Anne Helene Gjelstad has visited women living on the isolated Estonian islands of Kihnu and Manija - 'the Last Matriarchy in Europe' - and created the book "Big Heart, Strong Hands".

R.I.P. Captain Sir Tom Moore, who had (a long and adventurous life and) some encouraging advice: “For all those finding it difficult: the sun will shine on you again, and the clouds will go away.”

February is Black History Month. If you wanna join and need some inspiration here are some ideas. I have decided to - finally - start reading Colson Whitehead's "The Underground Railroad". (Also I will recommend the documentary on Toni Morrison: "The Pieces I Am".)

Okay, this is cute. A sneak peek from Peter Jackson's new documentary 'The Beatles: Get Back'. John, Paul, George, Ringo and a bunch of others having fun in the studio. The film opens on August 27 this year.

"It's impossible that's sure, so let's start working." I've just seen the amazing documentary "Man On Wire" about the French high-wire artist, Philippe Petit, famous for his high-wire walk between the towers of the World Trade Center in NYC in 1974. (Earlier on he also did a high-wire walk between the Notre Dame Cathedral towers in Paris and the Sydney Harbour Bridge). If you have a dream about doing something that seems out of reach, here's your inspiration!

We've had a bit of snow at my place, but I wish we'd had some more. Looks like fun this snowball fight (although I'm not sure the man on the bicycle agrees....). Lyon, January 1897.
